poem

this is a digital collage of leaves from my garden, tickets from a trip to europe and a sketch of a fresco in the museo correr in venezia. i filled a sketchbook full of lovely places with the simplicity of a pencil and paper. no color. just the stroke of the line. sketching was so meditative all by myself.

Suit

didn't suit their location any longer,
so i chopped them down yesterday.
wow that really opened up the garden and makes it feel so much less claustrophobic!
i will miss their firey red fall color though.
here's an ode to those beautiful shrubs that were sacrificed yesterday.
no worries...i plant new stuff in the garden all the time so there's no loss of oxygen being produced here.
oh, next to the euonymus leaves shown here are some sasafras leaves.

red:
it doesn't happen so much anymore, but when i was growing up i was constantly called red by strangers. that always made me mad because it was in a teasing tone. i didn't get it. my hair isn't red! sure i'm called a redhead, but it isn't red for heavens sake! i once tried to match my hair color to my oil paints and found that it is a mix of burnt umber and raw sienna. okay, enough venting for now....

sometimes i have trouble with vertigo.
trouble standing up.
trouble with the room seemingly spinning around.
trouble not getting sick to my stomach as a result.
these bizarre episodes are unpredictable and vary in duration.
on the second day of a month long painting residency
at the vermont studio center i had a vertigo episode that lasted six hours.
later that day i decided to paint what it feels like in the throws of vertigo when the walls become the ceiling and the mirror on the wall seems to be like a carpet on the floor.
actually it just keeps moving round and round.

change:
change the world for the better with the simple act of planting a tree. wangari maathai (nobel peace prize laureate) does this, one tree at a time, through the greenbelt movement in kenya.
